March 19th marks two years since the world lost Sudan. Sudan was the last male northern white rhino on the planet. His death rendered the species functionally extinct and served as a shocking reminder of the disastrous impact of shortsighted human greed. In memory of Sudan, we have a limited edition of Sudan flip-flop sculptures. Through a partnership with Ol Pejeta Conservancy, we will donate 50% of the profits towards the protection of rhinos. Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a non-profit wildlife conservancy in Central Kenya’s Laikipia County, works to conserve wildlife, provide a sanctuary for great apes and generate income through wildlife tourism and complementary enterprises for re-investment in conservation and communities.
On March 19th, 2018, Sudan left an empty space at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The conservancy is no longer mourning his death, but celebrating his life and legacy, using his story to raise awareness and create champions for wildlife all over the world. They have not given up hope for the northern white rhino. In July 2018, scientists announced a breakthrough for bringing the species back. As of March 2020, there are only two northern white rhinos left worldwide, they are both female and both infertile. However, in August 209, Scientists announced that they have successfully fertilized in-vitro embryos collected from the two remaining female northern white rhinos. The embryos are just one part of a long journey to stop the northern white rhino’s rapid descent into extinction.

- Watch Kifaru. This feature-length documentary film won both the Grand Jury and Audience awards at the 2019 Slamdance Film Festival. Kifaru follows the lives of two young Kenyan recruits who join Ol Pejeta Conservancy’s rhino caretaker unit – a small group of rangers that protect and care for Sudan. Spanning over the course of the caretakers’ first four years on the job, Kifaru allows viewers to intimately experience the joys and pitfalls of wildlife conservation firsthand through the eyes of these Kenyan rhinos caretakers, offering a once in a lifetime experience to feel the extinction feels like never before.
- Get your own Sudan from Ocean Sole. There is a limited amount of flip-flop rhino sculptures left. 50% of your purchase will be donated to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Once you get your flip-flop sculpture, snap a pic and share a few facts about rhinos to educate others.
According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, at the end of 2017, Kenya had a rhino population of 1,258. Help us help save the African Rhino and clean our beaches by purchasing one of our rhino sculptures.
