National Houseplant Appreciation Day – Ocean Sole

Hello Solemates, we trust you had a fantastic holiday season like we did! You are reading this blog because you care about the environment and doing some good! For all plant lovers, there’s another uniquely important day to note on the calendar: National Houseplant Appreciation Day.

What is National Houseplant Appreciation Day?

It is a day set to recognise the beauty and benefits of indoor plants and those growing outdoors. This day has been celebrated since the early 2000s.

When is it celebrated?

Annually, National Houseplant Appreciation Day falls on January 10th. It occurs in early January, right after the major holidays have ended. Therefore, Houseplant Appreciation Day is a chance to extend the spirit and cheer of the holiday season. It's also the perfect time to introduce a new plant in the home.

Home plants

If you have plants in your home, you already know the benefits; for those who haven’t gotten on this yet, here are a few benefits that will motivate you to consider having plants in your indoor spaces.

  • Improve air quality- Studies have shown that certain plants can help reduce toxins and pollutants in your home, making them an ideal addition for those suffering from respiratory issues or allergies.
  • Reduce anxiety- Caring for plants provides therapeutic benefits. Similar to outdoor gardening, indoor gardening may help to ease the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and dementia.
  • Brightens the room- Adding greenery instantly brightens your room and provides a calming ambience.

With all these benefits, you must wonder how you can contribute to National Houseplant Appreciation Day. Here are a few ways you can create a positive impact on this special day!

  • Adopt a plant- Take a trip to your local nursery and pick a new houseplant. Not sure which one to choose? Ask the experts at the nursery for advice on what kind of plant would be best for your home.
  • Create plant gifts- Surprise friends and family by making them a unique gift made with plants. Think about creating wreaths or plant arrangements; they make great gifts for any occasion.
  • Water your plants- The water you use and the frequency with which you water your houseplants depend on your plant type. Generally, flowering plants require more water, while succulents require less. If you get confused, plenty of information online will assist you in finding the best watering habits for your plants.

If you don’t have much of a green thumb, don’t worry, you can still find a houseplant that works for you! Houseplants like Aloe Vera and other succulents are generally very resilient and self-sustaining, requiring minimal care on your part.

National Houseplant Appreciation Day is for you if you are interested in plants. It’s a chance to introduce all plant benefits in your home and help make the earth green!
